On May 23, 2023, Lancaster Photography Association will present the program “Mobile Photography - How I use 10 of My Favorite Applications with the speaker, Jerry Hug. We will meet at the Antelope Valley Senior Center at 6:00 p.m. and Jerry will join us by Zoom.

He likes to show how to use these apps for special editing on your iPhones and Android cellphones. His specialty is really iPhones but he includes many of the apps that work on both platforms.

The old phrase “The Best Camera is the one that you have with you” is very true!  1) You should treat your iPhone and other Smart phones like it is a Big Boy/Girl camera. 2) Mobile photography lets you take the photo, edit the photo and share, all without a computer. Jerry’s favorite apps include: Snapseed, Touch/Retouch, Dramatic B/W by jixipix, Image Blender, Distressed FX+, Halide, Video 2 Photo, Reeheld, EvenLonger, In House Edits, and using all the built in applications on the cell phone.

On April 25, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., Lancaster Photography Association will be having member, David Wilkins, speak to us about star trail photography at Antelope Valley Senior Center.

This workshop will cover how to take and process images to make a star trail.  The stars appear to move during the night, when actually it is the earth that moves.  Learn the secrets to making a star trail that centers around the North star.  How to deal with the artifacts that show up in star shots such as airplane lights, satellite reflections and meteors, will be covered.  The workshop will go into the equipment needed and locations to capture star trails.  Basic processing to build a star trail will be covered.

On January 24, 2023, Lancaster Photography Association is happy to have our Acting President, Kathy Newman, share some Lightpainting photography tips. We will have an indoor presentation first which will be accessible on Zoom, and then we will put our knowledge into action. Bring your cameras, a tripod and a wired remote for some outdoor camera lightpainting in the parking lot (dress warmly if needed).

Kathy will share the necessary information needed to successfully create lightpainting images on your own, including camera settings, planning your shoot, and lightpainting equipment that will help you get your shot.

He will be speaking in-person at the Antelope Valley Senior Center and it will be shared on Zoom. He will share his techniques for making a self published photo book look as professional as possible.  We will learn from his lessons from the school of hard knocks, and he will go into depth on a few subjects relating to arranging photos, captions and copy editing.

He is hoping to inspire someone to make a photo book as a destination for images for a trip or event.

Take your Natural Light Portraits to the next level!

All portraits done with natural light are not equal. Too many photographers just accept the existing ambient light and end up with light that has no direction, lacking three dimensionality, or just flat light.

Jerry and Kathi Venz have been producing Natural Light Portraits professionally for over 30 years. In fact, the images that earned Jerry his Master’s Degree were images that merited or went loan in PPA International print competitions all using natural light.

So, how does Jerry take natural light to the next level? Simply, he uses the Subtractive Lighting Technique. This is the technique where you simply block light from one side of the scene using a hand-held black gobo (or flag) for individuals and with groups you use non-reflective natural features like trees, bushes, or rocks, creating a shadow on that side.

This lighting style is far more natural looking than additive lighting (using flash or reflectors) because it organically creates directional lighting in a flat light environment.

On September 27, 2022, at 6:00 p.m., we are pleased to have John Powers speak to us about creating an image from the past. How often do we take photos of historical reenactments and wish we could make them seem more realistic? Think costumes from the Civil War reenactments or the Renaissance Festival. Join us at the Antelope Valley Senior Center at 6:00 PM for a great time of learning!

John Powers will bring several different photos and walk everyone through the process, from capturing the moment to converting it to black and white or sepia, applying the textures, and adjusting everything along the way.  The end result is to give the viewer the feeling that they are there in the moment, looking at an image from the past coming alive.

While living in Tokyo, John used Japan as his base for six years for his travel photography throughout southeast Asia, focusing on such places as India, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and, of course, Japan.  Returning to the USA just over three years ago, John will continue his travel photography in Asia once the pandemic subsides.  In the meantime, John has been focusing on local reenactment events, capturing reenactors in archaic tintype effect.

As for photographic highlights, he was awarded Photographer of the Year from the Professional Photographers of Hawaii (PPH) several times and from the Professional Photographers of Los Angeles County.  John had his first book published just prior to the pandemic, entitled “Vietnam Today:  A Photographic Tour of Its Peoples and Landscapes.”   He holds the Master of Photography degree from PPA as well as the Certified Professional Photographer credentials.

The Lancaster Photography Association (LPA) is hosting a free photo mounting workshop on August 23, 2022 to help those in our community who want to enter prints in the AV Fair Photography Exhibit.

Participants need to bring their photos and foam core. The LPA will provide spray adhesive, surfaces to spray on, straight edges, knives and cutters, and demonstrate the mounting procedure.

LPA Members are encouraged to come and provide assistance. Bring cutting surfaces, straight edges and knives to help those who are new to the process.
