LPA’s Definition for TRAVEL – A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographic limitations. Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are not appropriate. Close up pictures of people or objects must include features that provide information about the environment.

Note 1: An image taken just while traveling may or may not fit this definition. The primary elements of the image must be characteristic with respect to features or culture.

Note 2: Entrants are cautioned that the sentence on arranged events or activities includes any images that appear to be arranged to the judges even though the judges will give benefit of the doubt to the maker. Entrants are therefore advised that such images may well be disqualified (DQed).

Alterations: As with all reality-based divisions, (Nature, Photo Travel, and Photojournalism), techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable modifications are removal of dust, scratches or digital noise, restoration of the existing appearance of the original scene, sharpening that is not obvious, and complete conversion to grayscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not eligible. All allowed adjustments must appear natural.

Note: “Restoration of the appearance of the original scene” may include techniques such as HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning provided they do not alter the contents of the original scene and the result looks natural

Borders: Borders are optional, but must be 3 or 4 pixels in width and must be white or a shade of grey.

Please contact Bonnie Matthews-Franke at competition@lpaphotography.org if you have any questions.

Workshop on Pictorial Pictures and Composition: Beyond the Basics by Nancy Lehrer -Jan. 24th 2017

Archives

[image1_left] A Workshop on Pictorial Pictures and Composition: Beyond the Basics, for January 24th, 2017 at the AV senior center, at 6:00 p.m. There will be a no-host dinner at the Greenhouse Cafe, at 4:30 p.m. to meet the presenter, Nancy Lehrer. Nancy comes highly recommended by our esteemed 'Hutch' Hutchison. She is well trained in composition by several great photographers and has won awards for her photography.

Nancy states that "our job as photographers is to present a slice of time as a single image, providing a rich and visually captivating story. We search for compelling subjects bathed in beautiful light, select our camera settings, wait for the perfect moment, and take the picture. But what is missing from this description of photography are two important choices: where we position ourselves and what we choose to frame. These two decisions are what creates the composition. The definition of composition is the relationship of the image’s constituent components or the way in which the whole of the image is made. Like choosing the right words to convey a spoken message, an image’s composition will make or break its impact and meaning.

The composition is far more than just following a set of rules. Concepts such as “the rule of thirds” or “using leading lines” are merely starting points for creating simple images and conveying straightforward stories. But to create a compelling photograph requires the control over the arrangements and juxtapositions of many image elements. In this presentation, we will examine compositional approaches that go beyond the basics to create order, lead the viewer, and tell our stories about the complex world around us."

About Nancy Lehrer - http://www.inancyimages.com/

Nancy Lehrer has been using photography to capture her unique world-view for most of her life. Her earliest photojournalist recognition came at a summer camp at the young age of 10 where, armed with her father’s Kodak Brownie camera, she earned the position of camp-photographer documenting the summer’s activities. Although she holds Masters degrees in Music and Computer Science, she has always held on to her passion for photography. She has studied photography from several American photography masters including Jay Maisel, Sam Abell, and Gerd Ludwig. She has received several local awards in the Ventura County area, such as awards at the Ojai Arts Center Photo Exhibit in 2014 and 2016, and at the Ventura County Fair, including the best of color division in 2009 for her Flamingo picture. Nancy has two books, Los Angeles, Yesterday and Today, and 2-MegaPixels or Less. Here is a link to a site that carries the book, Los Angeles, Yesterday and Today: http://www.blurb.com/user/inancy.

Marine invertebrates Field Trip - October 16, 2016

Archives

Lets Go To The Beach to take photographs of marine invertebrates. On Sunday, October 16 there will be a minus tide at Leo Carrillo State Park (Leo Carrillo State Beach). The tide charts show a  -.5 tide at Ventura at 4:24pm. A low tide allows more of the intertidal zone to be exposed. The best time to photograph in the rocky intertidal zone begins an hour before and continues for an hour after the low tide.  Participants should be aware that the rocky intertidal zone can be very slippery.  Wear a pair of athletic shoes to walk in the water and have a dry pair to wear home. Sunset is at 6:30 that evening so we will have an opportunity for a beach sunset also.  Surfers can also be found at Leo Cabrillo State Park. Following sunset those that wish can join us at Neptune’s Net for dinner.  We plan to be at the beach about 3pm.  According to the state park website there is some road reconstruction but pedestrian access is available.  Please sign up on the website so we can contact you about any late breaking field trip developments.  Sample photographs from Leo Carrillo can be found at Google Images.

You need to be a current LPA member and log into this site to sign up.
