LPA member Helen Henry arranged for a Photographer’s Day at the Poppy Reserve on March 25, 2012. LPA/PSA members were admitted for free. Helen also arranged a photography competition (with the help of Lee Garner) to benefit the parks, and organized a silent auction to raise funds for the Poppy Reserve and Saddleback Butte State Parks.  For the silent auction, beautiful framed wildflower photos were donated by Nan Carder, Lyle Trusty, Helen Henry, Sue Craft, Sue Liberto, Holly Peskin, and handmade glass fired Poppy photo frames and sun catchers were donated by Anita Kratofil. Silent auction open for 3 weeks. Stop by the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center to view items and place a bid. Center also offers a short video, wildlife and plant displays and gift shop.  Open 9-5 weekends and 10-4 weekdays during the wildflower season.

Four members of the Lancaster Photography Association (Norma Boggs, Tom Van Langenhoven, Pam Vick, and Nan Carder) attended the Black History Celebration on February 25, 2012 at the AV Senior Center. Many of the attendees were dressed in beautiful colorful outfits.

Pam Vick said that the Black History Celebration, which was held at the Lancaster Senior Center, was a day of remembrance and tribute. This was presented by entertainers as poetry, song, and dance.

The opening reception of the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) 27th Annual Juried All Media Art Show was held February 2, 2012 at the lounge inside Bex Restaurant.

For many years, the LPA has sponsored an LPA $100 Photography Award for the juried art show. Last year, after the passing of one of the founding members of the LPA, the LPA board chose to rename the award, the Dean Webb Memorial Photographic Award.
LPA member Lyle Trusty, and close friend to Dean, shared a few special memories of Dean and his photography, and then opened the envelope and announced the winner (selected by MOAH/judges).

Congratulations to Charles Hood for winning the Dean Webb Memorial Photography Award! His photograph “Geothermal Plant, Iceland” is currently on display at City Hall.

All show pieces are displayed at various businesses along Lancaster Blvd. Look for entries accepted by LPA members Helen Henry, Dale Ware, Carol Moss, Douglas Wade, and others.

All groups that meet at the AV Senior Center are required to have a representative attend the monthly Citizen’s Advisory Board (CA meeting.  As President of LPA, I have been attending these monthly meetings.  It is inspiring to be around so many active/involved seniors volunteering their time to help so many.

At that meeting, I was asked by the Friends of the Center (FOTC), if the LPA could provide a photographer for their Valentine’s Day Party.  Sue Liberto and I volunteered and were then quickly asked to photograph a Black History celebration at the end of the month.  I’m hoping to find another couple of LPA volunteers to photograph this event.

On Valentine’s Day, the AV Senior Center was transformed!  It was a pink/red party scene, with balloons, cupcakes, punch, raffle prizes, a DJ and lots of dancing.

On Sunday October 9, 2011, members Sue and Paul Craft, David Wilkins, and Douglas Wade met over a great home made Lasagna dinner prepared by Teri Wade. The meeting was very informal as we sat outside on the patio, and chatted about what we expect out of field trips. Some expressed that it was important to venture out into difficult areas in hopes of capturing a great image and others expressed concern over attendance and setting up easy/local/affordable field trips.

Community Service Project for the LPA

At the request of the Sheriff's Department this project has been placed on hold until after the first of the year.

This project is underway and members have ridden with a Sergeant on routine patrol and had opportunities to take photos of deputies doing their jobs.  Ride alongs have been during the day and afternoon shifts during the last week of September.  The Lancaster Sheriff’s station contacted the LPA with a request for help in putting pictures on the hallways of the station. The Station’s interior consists of many large, blank, Swiss-coffee painted walls.  They would love to fill those walls with images of the Antelope Valley and the deputies at work.  The final photo size would be 20 x 30 and the department will do any printing and mounting.  Each photographer will be given photo credit.

Christine and David Wilkins have had to overcome many obstacles to bring the memorial to completion, but it’s finally done….

It’s been an interesting nine months since Dec 26th, 2010, when Dean Webb passed into the sunset. We’ve had several occasions to commemorate his life and good works, and each of us has had an opportunity to speak to our relationship with Dean, remembering his great wit and friendship. It’s been a solemn time on occasion, but mostly there’s been a warm feeling of belonging to something greater than ourselves that has brought us all closer together.  He will be remembered long into our lives, and perhaps we’ll be a better person for having known him.

The Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association sponsored a memorial event and potluck supper to honor Dean Webb.  The event was held at the Red Rock Canyon State Park on Sunday evening, September 4.  Attendance was fantastic!  Representatives from the various groups and organizations that Dean supported spoke about their memories of Dean.  Lyle Trusty spoke on behalf of the LPA.

Besides the TV provided for the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve by the LPA other organizations provided memorials to Dean.  There will be an interpretive plaque on the turn out from Highway 14 to the Red Cliffs Area dedicated to Dean and there is a picnic table dedicated to Dean in the picnic area of Red Rock Canyon.
