Competition nights are always fun! Over 57 people were present, and there were many entries, all entering under the theme of Action/Motion. Entries consisted of 29 print, 10 slides, and 37 digital images. Our judge, Todd Neibling, from the Lancaster Museum & Art Gallery, gave a wonderful critique each and every entry.
It was a festive evening, with the red, white, & green holiday decorations, a Salon Show, the scent of turkey and stuffing in the air, the sweet sound of Christmas Carols coming from the piano, and a slide show of past field trips. Good times were had by all 45 members in attendance.
Paul Colter’s “Living in Borneo and Traveling Around the World on a Motorcycle”

Over 49 members/visitors were present for our November program "Living in Borneo and Traveling Around the World on a Motorcycle", presented by Paul Colter, from Ridgecrest, CA. Paul presently teaches anthropology and sociology as an adjunct professor at Cerro Coso Community College. He uses the movies that he created from slides for his classes at the college.
Our 2007-2008 competition year started this evening, and there were 79 entries.
Our judges were Master photographers from our own club – Fred Griggs, Dennis Goodno, and Lyle Trusty. Each provided a critique of the photos.
Lyle Trusty explained how photos at S4C are judged and provided 3 separate scores, for impact, composition, and technical skills.
This evening’s program was attended by 55 people. Many new visitors, who found out about our club at the AV Fair, were present, and several joined our club.
The Last time we did this was way back in 2002. Then, digital photography was in its infancy and most members were still shooting film. What a deference a few years make. Plenty of the older technology cameras were available waiting for someone to purchase for practically nothing. Sellers hoping someone would take a piece of equipment home before it ended up in the trash. It was like someone loosing a pet. You didn’t want to get rid of it but you knew it had to be done.
Year-End Competition and Installation of Officers.
Over 50 people and 5 visitors were present tonight for the Year End Competition! The first place winners from our 4 competitions over the past year, all competed for the year end trophies. Numerous beautiful photos aligned the stage, and it was so great to see so many photos from some of our newest members.
This evening’s program “Ultra Wide Angle Photography” was presented by Professional Photographer, Jim Cooluris. Jim traveled from Oxnard to share his digital show, and showed examples of what can be done with an ultra wide lens (10mm). Many questions surfaced throughout the program, and afterwards too. Jim talked about the techniques used to capture those unique shots. Some of his ultra wide angle photos, and article were featured in the April 2006 edition of Outdoor Photography magazine.
